External Communication, June 10, 2009
• In a joint ceremony, the State Governor of Morelos, Dr. Marco Antonio Adame, the Mayor of Cuautla, Sergio Rodrigo Valdespín Pérez, municipal representatives from the eastern region of Morelos, and the Ecoltec company, a subsidiary of cement maker Holcim Apasco, officially launched the project for the environmentally-safe elimination of waste tires in the Municipality of Cuautla.
• Expected to chip more than 100,000 tires, amounting to nearly 3,000 tons.

Cuautla, Morelos, June 10, 2009 – As part of the ceremonies for the World Day of the Environment, the Ecoltec company, a subsidiary of cement maker Holcim Apasco, along with the Municipal Health Administration, the State Ministry of Health and the Environmental Protection and Civil Protection administrations of the Municipality of Cuautla, seriously supported a commitment to protect the environment by launching a project to chip the discarded tires generated in the 16 municipalities of the eastern part of the State of Morelos.Ecoltec will allow, free of cost to the municipality of Cuautla, Morelos, the use of a mobile tire chipper worth one million dollars to process the tires taken to the landfill of Cuautla.

After they get chipped, the tires will be transported to the cement plant that Holcim Apasco operates in Acapulco, Guerrero, for their environmentally-safe elimination by co-processing them as fuel for Holcim Apasco’s cement kilns. This major preventative action is expected to help reduce substantially the incidence of dengue fever cases in the state, as discarded tires account for 50 percent of the puddles where the vector mosquitoes breed. Merely storing discarded tires in the open creates an ideal habitat for disease-transmitting mosquitoes, as well as for other insects and rodents.

Waste-tire co-processing in cement kilns is a proven, environmentally-safe process acceptable to Mexico’s environmental authorities for the disposal of waste subject to special management plants—such as discarded tires—by enabling immediate and final elimination.Co-processing, as set forth in the LGPGIR (General Act for the Prevention and Integral Management of Waste), is “The environmentally-safe incorporation of the wastes of an industry or known source into another productive process,” in the case of the cement industry, the use of waste materials as input for cement manufacturing.

Co-processing enables recovery of the energy contained in discarded tires in order to re-utilize it as alternate fuel. The collection centers are located in: the Landfill of the Municipality of Cuautla, at the Assistance Center of Colonia Madero, at the Fairgrounds, and also at the Police modules in the townships of Polvorín and Brisas and at the Sports Park. Citizens will be able to drop their waste tires at no cost to them.
