ECOPlanet Prime, the first calcined clay cement from Holcim Latin America offering up to 50% lower CO2 emissions

  • First operation in Latin America with proprietary technology to produce cement with calcined clay.

  • First ECOPlanet Prime cement in the Latin America market enabling the reduction of CO2 emissions by up to 50%*.

Supported by its strategy “Accelerating Green Growth”, Holcim has made a commitment to lead the green transformation of cement, advancing firmly toward a net-zero future with the commissioning of its first operation in Latin America that produces cement using innovative and low-carbon raw materials.

The first calcined clay cement made by Holcim in Latin America is produced in a cutting-edge manufacturing line in Mexico, using proprietary technology to produce low-carbon cements with locally sourced materials, offering up to 50%* lower CO2 emissions and a clinker factor reduction of between 45% and 55% per ton of cement, compared to standard cement (CEM I).

“The development of proprietary green technologies that have been tried and tested in countries like France and Italy is part of our plan to build a net-zero future. The first production line of calcined clay cements in Mexico is yet another milestone in our mission to decarbonize the construction industry”, said Oliver Osswald, Region Head of Holcim Latin America.

Calcined clay is one of the most viable solutions for producing low-carbon cement not only in Latin America, but around the world, due to its availability in nature all over the planet. It is also a great substitute for slag and fly ash, which are ever more scarce. This enabled the formulation of an eco-friendly cement that provides better performance and an easier application when compared with standard cement.

In a first phase, ECOPlanet Prime was launched in the Mexican market as part of the ECOPlanet range, the broadest range of green cements in the world. The next step in its deployment is investing in other operations in Mexico, Ecuador and Argentina to build a greener future.

“We’re intensifying the production of ECOPlanet Prime throughout Latin America by 2025 in order to drive our ECOPlanet range of low-carbon cements, enabling low-carbon construction at scale. This product already has a high level of acceptance among masons, pre-fab manufacturers and self-builders”, he added.

The attributes of Holcim’s new solution are superior to those of standard cement, offering better performance and greater ease of application, which makes it an ideal product for all types of construction projects and for manufacturing concrete elements that have no special requirements, providing greater quality and peace of mind in having an environmentally-friendly and respectful product.

ECOPlanet Prime is part of Holcim Latin America’s roadmap to decarbonize construction with a broad range of low-carbon materials, from calcined clay to construction and demolition materials, and contributes directly to Holcim’s new vision to be the global leader in innovative and sustainable building solutions

*50% reduction of CO2 : Methodology: CO2 protocol for cement and energy from the Cement Sustainability Initiative (Version 3) of the World Business Forum for Sustainable Development. CO2 emissions reduction compared with our Ordinary Portland Cement emissions. ECOPlanet Prime complies with quality requirements as a Composite Portland Cement Class 30 Strength, as stated by current Norm NMX-C-414-ONNCCE in Mexico.
